Since he received nothing but bad critiques from the leading Viennese press, it meant much to him for at least the few papers that were well-disposed toward him to publish reports about successful performances in Vienna or abroad. For a long time, his symphonies were regarded not only as overly long but also as difficult to play. Some of his pupils therefore did their best to present the works to the public in the form of piano reductions, in the context of the concerts of Vienna’s Academic Wagner Society.
The story of the publication of Bruckner’s scores is a chapter all its own. 12 For of the altogether 131 complete works listed in the index of his works, at least 30, nearly one fourth, that is, were printed during his lifetime. The story of the publications, however, was erratic in its course. After the two early printings from the time in Linz, those of the Germanenzug (WAB 70) and the hymn In St. Angelum custodem (WAB 18), no other work of his appeared in print for ten long years. In 1878, the Third Symphony (WAB 103) came out at the instigation of Theodor Rättig, and only during the years between 1884 and 1894, after Bruckner’s fame had begun to spread, twenty-seven additional works appeared.
It is likely that he simply could not get over his ultimate defeat in the long struggle against Bruckner’s lectureship. ” On October 15, 1874, he joined Vienna’s Academic Richard-Wagner-Association and thereafter missed no opportunity to profess his adherence to the “New German” camp. In two of his petitions of 1874, he referred expressly to the goodwill of Wagner and Liszt and to the honor of Wagner’s having accepted his dedication of the Third Symphony. All of this Hanslick, who had become Wagner’s relentless adversary, and who zealously championed his friend Brahms, must have regarded as a provocation.
