Shamatha is geared to the idea of freeing oneself from the hell realm, the hungry ghost realm, and the animal realm, both physicall-y and psychologically. That is the case because psychologically we are paying attention to what is happening with us, and physically we're paying attention to what we are doing step by step, from the microscopic level to the cosmic level. Meditation practice at the shamatha level is very definite and important so that as we go further on the path into mahayana and vajrayana, we don't collect mahayana neuroses and distortions, and vajrayana neuroses and distortions.

These four aggregates or obstacles are just things that come up in your mind. So, they are slightly different. Q: These are all fifth skandha? R: Now that you mention it, yes. Q: You mentioned three types of learning: hinayana, mahayana, and vajrayana, and I wondered if you associated them with the next three items you mentioned which were sila, samadhi, and prajiia? R: Well, those are the three types of learning. Actually, within hinayana there are three types of learning. And within mahayana and vajrayana each, there are also three types of learning.
