Shamatha is geared to the idea of freeing oneself from the hell realm, the hungry ghost realm, and the animal realm, both physicall-y and psychologically. Meditation practice at the shamatha level is very definite and important so that as we go further on the path into mahayana and vajrayana, we don't collect mahayana neuroses and distortions, and vajrayana neuroses and distortions.
These four aggregates or obstacles are just things that come up in your mind. So, they are slightly different. Q: These are all fifth skandha? R: Now that you mention it, yes.
